Day 1: Marrakech – Ouarzazate
Marrakech to Fes Desert Trip 5 days by departure in the morning from your riad and drive to Ouarzazate. You will travel through the Atlas Mountains and via the famous Tizi-n-Tichka pass (2260m).
Along the way, you will stop at panoramic viewpoints for breaks and photos. The views of the mountains, the green valleys, and the adobe-built Berber villages are spectacular. Visit the Kasbah Telouet, which served as palatial residence and features tiling artwork and wood craftsmanship.
You then drive from Telouet through the beautiful landscapes of the Ounila Valley to the kasbah Ait Ben Haddou. Taste lunch in one of the many restaurants overlooking the kasbah. Ait Ben Haddou is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a backdrop for several cinematic artworks such as “Gladiator” and “Lawrence of Arabia”.
In the afternoon, you will explore the Kasbah with a local guide, to learn about the history of this site and interesting features. Afterward, you arrive at Ouarzazate, where an authentic riad offers dinner and night’s rest.
Day 2: Ouarzazate – Dades Gorges
Following breakfast in the riad, you will continue your Marrakech to Fes desert trip. Enjoy a scenic drive through the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, where many kasbahs stand tall among the trees. Shortly after, you will arrive at Skoura Oasis, full of green fields and palm trees.
Here, you will visit the beautifully restored Kasbah Amredhil and tour its small museum, full of ancient agriculture equipment and housing furniture. Next, you travel along the fertile Valley of the Roses, and then Kel’aa M’gouna, where you can visit the local cooperatives producing cosmetic products from the flowers of the valley.
Shortly after, you will drive off-track to the Dades Gorges which will be the venue for lunch. After lunch, explore the Dades Valley’s sheer red canyons and breath-taking lush oases and go for a walk alongside the Boumalne Dades river.
The itinerary takes you to the Toudgha Gorges, where you will have dinner and spend the night in a beautiful guest-house overlooking the valley.
Day 3: Dades Gorges – Merzouga
After breakfast, wander the Tinghir green palm grove, where you can witness dates and figs. From here, you travel through many Berber villages where you will stop for breaks and to learn about life in southern Morocco.
Then, you drive along the Ziz Valley, full of palm trees, and fortified Kasbahs, and arrive in Erfoud in time for lunch. After lunch, you can visit the fossil exhibits, where you can see how locally found fossils are processed into souvenirs and house furniture.
In the afternoon, you will continue your desert trip to the rolling dunes of Erg Chebbi in Merzouga. Here, an hour to an hour and a half leads to the summit of the high dunes, from which the sunset is spectacular.
At the campsite, you will be welcomed by mint tea and biscuits. At night, taste a traditional Moroccan dinner under the Saharan night sky, followed by Berber drumming, singing, and dancing around a fire camp. Sleep in a comfortable nomad tent in a desert camp near the big dunes.
Day 4: Merzouga
After breakfast at the campsite, enjoy a full day of desert trekking in the Sahara Desert. Camels will carry everything needed for your trek. Either, you can ride them or walk behind them as they carry what you need for you desert trek.
You will be accompanied by camel-men and nomad guides who will navigate the way through the dunes and prepare your lunch on a spot among the dunes. You will walk for about three hours in the morning and another three hours in the afternoon.
Alternatively, after breakfast, you can go for a 4×4 tour around the dunes, sip a glass of tea with a nomad family. Visit Gnawa people playing Gnawa music in Khamlia village. In the afternoon, drive to Rissani, to visit its local souk and explore the village. Dinner and overnight will be at the camp.
Day 5: Merzouga – Fes
If you get up early in the morning and climb up to the summit of the dunes. You will be reward with amazing views of the spectacular sunrise and the wind-swept dunes that stretch as far as you can see.
Back at the camp, breakfast is served and then you continue your Marrakech to Fes desert trip. Go on another an hour to an hour a half camel ride in the rolling dunes of Erg Chebbi. Then, you travel north along Rissani, Errachidia, and then Midelt.
Lunch will be in Midelt, which is called “the apple capital” and situated at the foot of the Ayachi Mountain.
In the afternoon, you will travel along a beautiful cedar forest full of green oaks and cedar trees to reach Azrou. Here, you can see Barbary apes looking out for titbits. Next, we travel through Ifrane, remarkable for its slopy rooftops, which is very unusual in Morocco, and reach Fes by the end of the afternoon.
